The celebrated Bach Choir brings choral music alive from the America's in Bach's time. Reprising a program presented in Leipzig as part of 2023 Bach Festival, this progam was received in Leipzig with a sustained standing ovation.
There is a rich body of music that existed during Bach's lifetime. Though he probably never heard most of these styles, they certainly came to have great infuence on American music - and also even the way in which we hear and perform Bach's music.
The program includes a motet co-written by Bach and Telemann, a work by Bach's uncle Johann Michael, and these works from American sources: 3 spirituals, born in the depths of the evil of slavery, these musical expressions have a depth that is rarely equaled; 2 pieces from the Sacred Harp tradition, music from the east coast, including Appalacia, some of these works are the earliest written music in north america; Psalm 147 for double choir by Mexican born composer Maunuel de Sumaya - this powerful work, influenced by Italian and Spanish style, is a rich and expressive example from the Cathedral of Mexico City. In addition, we will hear some examples of early American keyboard music, including by Samual Felsted, who was the first american composer to write an oratorio.
Rick Erickson conducts and joins Ben Kerswell at the keyboard to present this unique program!
